Know What Size Storage Unit You Need
The time has come to rent a storage unit and you need to set a budget. Before you go anywhere near dealing with self storage prices, it’s important to first understand what size storage unit you need. If you’re just storing a few odds and ends — things like seasonal decorations, linens, or lawn ornaments — it’s likely that you’ll only need about 25 square feet of space, which is considered a small storage unit. If you are storing items from a dorm room or apartment, for example, and have chairs, a sofa, shelves, and other items, the smallest storage unit isn’t going to cut it. You’re going to want a minimum of around 50 square feet or so for a few smaller items like folding chairs or a futon. But when you start storing large pieces of furniture, art, and other home goods, you’ll likely need around 100 square feet of storage space to make sure all of your belongings are stored properly and safely. Storing the majority of the items inside a smaller home will require even more space. Typically, around 200 square feet will do the trick there. So before you start budgeting, make sure you take the time to determine what size storage unit you’ll need.
Consider Whether You Need Climate Control
Not sure whether or not you need climate control services? It really depends on what you’re storing. For instance, if you’re storing a bunch of antique items or a few sets of wooden furniture, it’s probably a good idea to invest in a climate-controlled storage unit. Likewise, any electronics or paper items would be better off in a storage unit with climate control capabilities. If you’re worried about any of your belongings getting moldy or warped while they’re in storage, climate control is a safe bet. But if you’re storing items that are meant to be outside or that aren’t susceptible to damage as a result of the temperature or humidity level, then you should be fine without climate control in your storage unit. That being said, it’s still a good idea to invest in waterproof storage containers for smaller items to keep them in tip top shape.
